Pope Warns AI Could Erase Our Humanity
(00:00.418)
The Pope and AI. We’ve gonna go over the Pope’s encyclical warning, basically talking about artificial intelligence and how it threatens to normalize an anti-human vision. Again, unfortunately, unfortunately from what I’ve seen across many of the media outlets so far, they really haven’t looked deeply into what.
Pope had to say. you know, a couple on CNBC this morning, you know, cracking jokes and and making fun and calling, you know, communists, all these various different things, when, quite frankly, it’s the exact opposite. It’s the exact opposite. And again, it’s, you know, people that none too happy with the Pope about his criticism of the United States and our conflict in Iran, and they’re they’re bringing that into things, actually seeing it across other.
networks as well as the usual suspects that are out there. I often I often cite Dr. Ian Malcolm character from Jurassic Park. when he makes that line he goes to see Jurassic Park and talking about human beings and power and the fact that you know you didn’t think about whether you you could do something, it’s whether or not you should do something. the Pope warned
That AI could, could you gotta scan. That’s why you have to be cautious. Normalize an anti-human vision. It said the concentration of immense digital power in the hands of a few private actors needs to be countered. it is basically a warning to Silicon Valley and humanity, talking about the future of civilization.
As new technologies rapidly advance. he said the humans will be reduced. The risk is that humans could be reduced to mere cogs in a system driven toward ever greater efficiency. And in this, he basically used two biblical images to describe the choice that humanity is facing. the primary choice is not between a yes or a no to technology, but rather between constructing babel.
(02:28.586)
Or rebuilding Jerusalem. So what did he mean by that? The Tower of Babel in the Bible, it’s was a massive project, grandiose project, top down. decisions were driven by pride, profit, a push for homogenization. when he talked about contrast that with the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Where diverse people work together to rebuild the ruined walls, establish fraternal coexistence within them. again, does this surprise anybody at all? I wanna remind everyone that again, he chose the name Leo because his predecessor, you going back to was basically there,
Pope during the industrial revolution and put out warnings as well. I, for one, have put out my criticism of certain types of technology that you know we’re told are are wonderful and great and made the world better. And I’m like, it hasn’t. Hasn’t. And we’ve had these conversations here on the program. I have these conversations with my kids.
You know, talking about life in America prior to social media and influencers and and all the nonsense that has infected us. I mean, when social media came out, I know I’ve repeating myself here, I warned, I said, Hey, listen, this is gonna turn into the pink slime from Ghostbusters to getting everybody angry with one another, and it’s gonna turn out to a disaster. And I would say that, you know, if social media was gone tomorrow, the world would be a better place. And, you know.
Prove me wrong on that. Tell me really how much better society is because of social media. Some of the things that the the Pope talked about in this encyclical, and quite frankly, the media is not talking about. And again, this I gotta admit, you know, honestly, it put a smile on my face going through this, is because these are things I’ve been saying as well.
(04:52.62)
The problem with AI is and in talking about it’s not just AI, but tech in general. The fact that be being an influencer and being more popular and getting subscribes is more important than truth. I often, you know, cite punches pilot. What is truth? And you take a look at our our day and age, and that’s a question.
It’s a question, you know, lie makes its way how many times around the globe in today’s day and age before the truth gets out the front door, if it even can get out the front door? he talked about the use of technology and manipulating data. too much screen time, he talked about. Is he wrong there?
Is he is he wrong? Yeah, amount of time, maybe do you see people walking around like this capturing life through their phones? It’s i is he wrong? Does he have a point there? he wants does want to get rid of technology by any stretch of the imagination. What he is saying is that we need to have AI that helps enhance.
Humanity helps enhance humanity, not undermine humanity.
Catholic. We want a society that’s built upon what? Forgiveness, compassion, and peace.
(06:42.126)
It’s a Pope. It’s Catholic. Forgiveness, compassion, and peace. A society based upon love. underlying theme that I talk about very often on my weekend radio program, that you know, we are all tasked. We are all tasked to go out there to build, create, protect.
And teach and again, I I got a kick out of this because the Pope actually he did a movie sub rep well he didn’t do from the movie exactly. He did a line from Lord of the Rings, Gandalf. And I’m I’m paraphrasing it, I don’t have it right in front of me where Gandalf is talking about how people we need to, you know, tend to our own gardens around us and leave.
Leave the make the world a better place for the following generations. And I thought that that was e extraordinary. But again, see, wrong.
Is it wrong? Go out there, build, create, protect, and teach.
Gonna give you some of the lines and some of the things, just a few things that are in there. And I haven’t I haven’t finished reading the entire piece. Artificial needs to be disarmed, free from logic, that turn it into an instrument of domination, exclusion, and death. Troubling voices have reached me about increasingly autonomous weapons systems.
(08:29.56)
particularly beyond any human reach to govern them effectively. Again, he’s been talking with the people at Silicon Valley. They’ve been doing this for 10 years now. Okay? Prior to him looking into this. And you’re hearing from people inside of companies and I I’ve talked about my friends that are in the sector and the concerns that they have.
This a fact they don’t really talk about this on TV. You got actually people working on these systems that have committed suicide.
Because they’re f frightened, they’re upset w what they’ve created. I kid you not.
(09:15.776)
Autonomous weapon systems, particularly beyond any human reach to govern them effectively. I hear very troubling accounts of algorithms that block access to health care, employment, and security on the basis of data tainted by prejudice and injustice. Again, some of the the comments that I also heard from the you know, the the the morons on TV. And I’m sorry, I don’t call them out.
They are because again, you know, they don’t really do any homework themselves. The producers put the crap together, give them a couple sound bites, and away they go. yes, you know, it’s gonna be you know, anti-growth and all of these things. And then some of the people were talking about how, you know, they’re communist and socialist and universal basic income. No, he’s totally against that.
And the say the say was it’s kind of funny. I’m I’m reading through this and this is we w we’ve gone over this here on my show. What this is the you know, this it’s against human nature.
The idea that AI is gonna put us in some sort of utopia. Utopia is scary. Again, I I cite that movie Wally. Here’s the Pope. To eliminate suffering entirely would mean, in the end, extinguishing love and desire as well. Those who love and desire cannot avoid passing through trial and suffering.
And over the years we carry within us lessons that leave their mark like scars. It’s character, that’s how you build character. The memories of a journey shaped by freedom and failure, dreams and disappointments. Amen.
(11:12.204)
It is only thanks to the interplay of these elements that the wonders of the soul occur within us, allowing us to sense the richness of humanity. To renounce this adventure, both tragic and splendid, in the name of a presumed transcendence of all limits, could mean many things, but it would no longer be human. It’s fast because again, I’ve talked a lot about this as of late.
And what scares me.
(11:48.6)
Yeah, again talking about
AI and tech public opinion is gradually being shaped and conditioned by polarizing media narratives, which are often amplified by algorithms that prioritize conflict and confrontation. He just is going after the entire grifting social media influencer class. And I told you that here as well.
Yeah, told this directly. Chris, you know you want to get those numbers up on your podcasts and you wanna get it out to more people. you’ve got to be more polarizing. You gotta pick a side.
You gotta pick a side. We live in a world where again, Laura Loomer.
Will get way more attention than I will get by being horrific online and lying to people. That’s that’s just the reality. Okay? And again, is the Pope wrong on this?
(12:59.288)
Gonna basically again talking about the the church’s social doctrine and I’m gonna conclude with this. and again, we we do live in a day and age. glad you’re listening to this podcast. You don’t have to trust me. You can go do your own homework on this. What I’m just telling you is don’t trust anybody on TV.
Understand that their motivations are. Because again, and and how they’re getting paid, how they’re putting money in their pocket. in light the Pope, in light of what has been said so far, the church’s social doctrine can be seen more authentically. It’s not a handbook of principles and norms to be applied, but a process of shared discernment. It is born from the encounter between the eternal truth of the gospel and the questions of history.
It allows itself to be challenged by the signs of the times and draws nourishment from the contributions of science, culture, and human experience. Therefore, when the dignity of our brothers and sisters is violated, when politics fails to address the tragedies of humanity, when the economy turns against the person or science oversteps the limits of its competence, the church, together with other Christian denominations and believers of other religions, must make her voice heard, not in order to dominate, but to promote communion.
Again, this is the Catholic Church. Wha what did you think that they were gonna say? And you have a problem with this? I’m just curious. Understood in this way, social doctrine becomes a theology of communion in history, a history in which the word made flesh continues to be present through dialogue, memory, and prophecy. this magnifica huminitas.
again look at it. Go over it. I’m I’d love to get your feedback. Be thrilled to get your your feedback on what your thoughts are on this. Because again, I I don’t find a problem anywhere. Same exact concerns that again many of my clients, many of my listeners have I I have lays out.
(15:22.018)
Sometimes you just have to slow things down, people. Understand what you’re dealing with.
