Paid Influencers and Political Hacks Are Gaslighting You About Grocery Prices
Welcome to the Great Affordability Wars
We are in the middle of what I am calling the Great Affordability Wars of 2026, and the battlefield is social media. On one side you have real Americans getting crushed by the cost of groceries, housing, energy, insurance, and healthcare. On the other side you have a parade of paid influencers, ex-politicians, and partisan hacks who will tell you whatever narrative pays best this week.
Here is the thing about these influencers. They get paid to post. They do not disclose it the way they should, but they get paid. And when the same people who spent four years screaming about grocery prices under Biden suddenly go silent the moment a Republican is in office, you need to understand that their outrage was never about your grocery bill. It was about their content strategy.
The Numbers Are Not Debatable
Forget the spin. Here is what actually happened to prices over the last twenty years.
- Steak per pound: Up 155% since 2006.
- Ground beef: Up 210%. Not a typo.
- Chicken per pound: Up 95%.
- Fish per pound: Doubled.
- Cup of coffee: Up 400%. From seventy-five cents to three dollars and seventy-five cents.
And those are just food items. Add in housing costs that have exploded in most markets, auto insurance that has become a genuine household budget crisis, health insurance premiums that consume an embarrassing share of take-home pay, and energy costs that fluctuate wildly but trend in one direction over time.
Nobody with a functioning brain looks at these numbers and says everything is fine. Unless, of course, they are getting paid to say everything is fine.
The Intellectual Dishonesty Is Stunning
I want to call out something specific. There is a crowd out there that wraps itself in the word conservative while doing something that is profoundly unconservative, which is refusing to engage with facts they find politically inconvenient. Real conservatism is about accountability, responsibility, and truth. Pretending prices have not gone parabolic because your guy is in office is not conservative. It is just propaganda.
The CK Louis bit about fairness is actually instructive here. His daughter was upset that her sister got the last popsicle and kept saying it is not fair. And he looked at her and said he did not even know what that meant. The point was not that fairness does not matter. The point was that the people genuinely struggling, the people who cannot put food on the table, those are the ones we should be focused on. Not the influencer class performing outrage for engagement metrics.
What You Should Actually Take From This
Stop letting political theater distract you from the financial reality you are living in.
- The cost of living has risen dramatically regardless of who is in office. This is a structural problem, not a partisan one.
- Anyone who tells you prices are fine right now without acknowledging the twenty-year trend is either ignorant or lying to you.
- Your financial plan needs to account for real-world inflation, not the version that makes someone’s political argument look better.
- The people profiting from your confusion, whether they are influencers, politicians, or financial product salespeople, all benefit from you staying distracted and uninformed.
The Great Affordability Wars are not being fought in your interest. They are being fought for clicks, for donations, and for political power. Your job is to see through it, plan accordingly, and protect your own household.
