Politicians Are Bragging About Your 401(k) While Your Net Worth Craters
The Soundbite That Is Wearing Thin
Here is the move. When the economic data gets uncomfortable, politicians point to the stock market and your 401(k) and say, see, things are great. It is clean. It is simple. It fits on a bumper sticker. And it is leaving out a massive chunk of the story.
I am in this business. I know how these accounts work, and I recommend them. But I am not going to let anyone use them as a propaganda tool while real Americans are watching their overall financial picture deteriorate. Let me give you the numbers they are not putting in the press release.
Median net worth changes from 2022 to today, by age group:
- Age 75 and older: UP 37%
- Age 65 to 74: DOWN 4%
- Age 55 to 64: UP 2%
- Age 45 to 54: DOWN 6%
- Age 35 to 44: UP 4%
- Under age 35: DOWN 23%
That bottom number. Down 23% for Americans under 35. That is not a rounding error. That is a collapse in financial footing for an entire generation, happening at the exact same time the stock market is hitting records and AI companies are minting new billionaires.
Your Retirement Balance Is Not Your Financial Reality
This is where the messaging completely falls apart. Yes, if you have been disciplined and contributing to your 401(k) for years, that balance looks good right now. I am glad. Genuinely. But that money is not available to you. It is locked behind a wall of tax penalties and restrictions, and the loan provision that was briefly expanded to $100,000 during COVID is back down to $50,000.
So when a working parent in their late 30s hears that their retirement account is up, and then goes to buy groceries, fill the tank, and pay rent, the disconnect is immediate and infuriating. That account balance does not lower the price of eggs. It does not cut their insurance bill. It does not exist in their day-to-day financial life at all.
Pointing to it as evidence of prosperity is not just misleading. It is insulting to people who are genuinely struggling right now.
What Actually Fixes This
Here is what I want to hear instead of the 401(k) victory lap:
- A real conversation about tariff policy and who actually bears that cost at the consumer level
- Serious discussion about corporate tax structure and how it flows through to prices
- Accountability on the geopolitical decisions driving commodity and energy costs higher
- Honesty about the fact that asset price inflation benefits people who already own assets far more than people who are trying to build them
The Data Does Not Lie
The 75-and-older crowd is doing great. Good for them. They have assets accumulated over decades and they are benefiting from appreciation. But the Americans who are 25, 35, or even 45 years old right now are not experiencing the same economy that is being described in political talking points.
When the data on median net worth shows negative movement across most working-age Americans, that is the story. Not the market ticker. Not the AI stocks. Not your retirement account balance that you cannot touch for another 20 years. The people in charge need to stop celebrating and start solving.
