Cornerstones vs. Entitlement: The Real Reason Most People Never Build Anything Worth Keeping

Food Throwing, Entitlement, and the Death of the Work Ethic

I was on vacation in Greece. A hotel worker told me his day was ruined because guests, kids specifically, were throwing food and screaming at the staff. The matriarch of the group later cornered the hotel manager and laid into her publicly.

I will not name the country these people came from. It does not matter. What matters is the mindset. And that mindset is becoming a lot more common, including right here in America.

This is what happens when cornerstones get removed from a life.

Obama Said “You Didn’t Build That.” He Was Wrong About the Why.

Everybody remembers the outrage over that line. I was not a fan either. But here is where I land on it now.

You are right that you did not build it alone. But the people who built it with you were not the government. They were your grandparents who came through hell. Your parents who got up before dawn. Your spouse who held things together when everything else was falling apart.

That is who gets the credit. Not a policy. Not a program. People.

My grandfather came from Italy. My other grandparents came from Poland. What they endured to get here and what they built after arriving is not something a government talking point can claim ownership over.

The Three in the Morning Standard

My dad was a school teacher and he ran a janitorial business on the side. He would:

• Wake up at three in the morning to clean commercial buildings
• Shower at the school and teach all day
• Come home, see his kids, take a short nap
• Go back out and clean another building at night

That was his routine. Not once in a while. Consistently, in whatever weather upstate New York decided to throw at him.

My mother made lunches every single day. Unglamorous, repetitive, essential acts of commitment. That is a cornerstone.

My mother-in-law was shot in the leg by a Nazi soldier as an infant. She survived. She built a life. She passed values down through generations that eventually became part of the DNA of Markowski Investments.

Wall Street Will Never Teach You This

The financial industry loves to talk about returns, alpha, diversification, and fees. What they will never talk about is the thing that actually determines whether a family builds lasting wealth or watches it evaporate in one generation.

Character. Work ethic. Respect. Cornerstones.

The people who work with me did not just show up to collect a paycheck. They helped build something. They are the cornerstones. Without them there is no company.

And here is what I want you to sit with:

• The kid throwing food at a hotel worker in Greece is learning something. The wrong thing.
• The kid watching his dad get up at three in the morning to clean office buildings is also learning something. The right thing.
• What are the people in your life learning from watching you?

You can have the best investment portfolio in the world. If you have not passed down the values that protect and grow wealth across generations, you have built nothing that lasts. The money will be gone inside of twenty years.

Cornerstones are not optional. They are the whole foundation.
