A Republican Teaming Up With Elizabeth Warren to Raise Your Taxes Is Exactly the Problem
Bernie Moreno and Elizabeth Warren Sitting in a Tree
Let me be blunt. When a sitting Republican senator teams up with Elizabeth Warren to raise taxes on working Americans and calls it saving Social Security, something has gone seriously wrong with the political class in this country.
Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio is pushing legislation to eliminate the Social Security payroll tax cap. Right now, you pay 6.2 percent on wages up to $176,100. Self-employed people pay 12.4 percent, which caps at roughly $22,878. Under this proposal, that cap disappears entirely. Every dollar you earn gets hit.
The sales pitch is the usual stuff. Why should a nurse pay a larger percentage than a corporate lawyer? It will inject $3 trillion over ten years into a program heading toward insolvency. Seniors deserve dignity. Blah blah blah.
Here is what they do not say.
What They Are Not Telling You
Remove the payroll tax cap, and high earners and self-employed professionals face a combined effective tax rate of 52 to 53 percent. I run my own business. I already pay both sides of the payroll tax. Stack this proposal on top of federal income tax, state income tax, and Medicare, and I would be working for the government until late June before keeping a single dollar for myself.
And here is the part that should make every working American furious:
- You pay dramatically more into the system but your benefit does not increase proportionally
- The program stops functioning as a retirement benefit you earned and becomes straight up income redistribution
- There is zero structural reform attached to this. No changes to the benefit formula. No adjustments to eligibility. Just a bigger tax bill
- A 2025 poll showing 62 percent of Republicans support this tells you more about how the question was framed than about actual public understanding of the consequences
Social Security Has Been a Mess for Decades
I remember when the Republican Party actually talked about the structural problems with Social Security. They called it what it is, a Ponzi scheme that relies on an ever-growing base of workers to pay the people at the top. That base is shrinking. The math has never worked long term.
But fixing it properly requires political courage. It requires telling people hard truths about benefit adjustments, eligibility ages, and the limits of what government can promise. Nobody in Washington wants to do that.
So instead we get Bernie Moreno standing next to Elizabeth Warren, announcing that the solution is to take more money from the people who already pay the most, hand it to a broken system with no structural fixes attached, and call themselves heroes for doing it.
The Only Real Protection Is Your Own Plan
If you are counting on Social Security to fund your retirement, you are betting on the competence of the same people who let this problem fester for thirty years. That is a bet I would not make.
- Build retirement income that does not depend on Congress
- Understand your real effective tax rate and plan around it, not around what you hope tax policy will look like
- Work with an advisor who will tell you the truth about what the government owes you versus what it can actually deliver
- Stop treating Social Security as a retirement plan and start treating it as a potential bonus if it survives
The government created this problem. They are now proposing to solve it by reaching deeper into your pocket. That is not a solution. That is a continuation of the same failure with a new tax attached.
