They Never Taught You This in School, and Wall Street Is Counting on It
My Actual Job Description
Somebody in New York asked me this past weekend what I do for a living. I kept it simple. I keep people from doing stupid stuff. That is it. That is the whole thing.
It sounds like a punchline but it is not. After 30 years running a financial firm and 26 years investigating every scam, Ponzi scheme, and predatory product this industry has ever cooked up, keeping people from doing stupid stuff is the most valuable service I can provide. And the demand for it never goes away.
The Education System Failed You on Purpose or by Accident. The Result Is the Same.
Donald Luskin has a line I have used for years: the conspiracy to keep people poor and stupid. Whether it is an actual conspiracy or just catastrophic institutional negligence, it does not matter. The outcome is identical.
We had home economics in school. We made cookies. We sewed things. Nobody taught us:
- How compounding interest works and why starting at 25 versus 35 is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars
- How credit card companies trap you with minimum payments designed to maximize their profit and your suffering
- What a mortgage actually costs over 30 years when you factor in total interest paid
- How to read a financial statement or evaluate whether an investment pitch makes any sense at all
Sit down with me and a compounding calculator for ten minutes and I guarantee you will be stunned. Not because the math is complicated. Because nobody ever showed it to you. That gap is not an accident for the people who profit from your confusion.
Con Artists Know Exactly What They Are Doing
Every fraud I have ever covered, Bernie Madoff, private equity cons, annuity traps, all of it, exploits the same two levers: greed and fear. And here is the part that always catches people off guard. The greed being exploited is usually not selfish greed. It is the desire to provide for your kids, leave something to your grandchildren, support your community. Con artists identify your deepest motivations and they aim directly at them. That is why smart, good people get taken.
Stop Waiting for Someone Else to Save You
I used to be angrier about all of this. Louder. More confrontational on air. And I still have zero patience for fraud. But I have also learned something over two and a half decades of doing this. Blame does not protect you. Ownership does.
When you take full responsibility for your financial decisions, the good ones and the bad ones, you gain something the con artists and the predatory advisors cannot touch. You gain the ability to correct course. You stop being a victim waiting to happen.
There are no shortcuts to real wealth. Every dollar that lasts was built through:
- Work
- Time
- Discipline
Anybody selling you something different is selling you a trap. And Wall Street has been very, very good at packaging those traps in professional-looking brochures.
