The Negativity Machine Is Robbing You Blind and the NYC Marathon Proves It
The Outrage Industrial Complex Does Not Want You to See This
Here is the dirty little secret nobody in media, social or otherwise, wants you to figure out. Anger is a product. Division is a business model. Every platform, every algorithm, every talking head with a hot take is monetizing your fury and your fear. And the more you consume it, the more paralyzed, isolated, and miserable you become.
I have called this out for years. The negative madness spiral is real. It is engineered. And it is doing damage to the way everyday Americans think, make decisions, and see their own future. When you are drowning in manufactured outrage, you cannot think clearly about your money, your family, or anything else that actually matters.
So let me tell you what I saw this past weekend that cut straight through all of it.
What 60,000 Strangers Taught Me About Real America
My son Steven ran the New York City Marathon. I followed him through the course, mile eight, mile sixteen at the 59th Street Bridge, and the final stretch near the Plaza Hotel. And what I witnessed along those streets was the single most effective antidote to the negativity machine I have encountered in years.
Over a million people. Lining the streets. Cheering for complete strangers.
- 60,000 runners from every country, every background, every walk of life
- Every dollar raised by participants goes straight to charity, not to some corporate slush fund
- A woman eight months pregnant ran the full course. I saw her at mile eight with sparkles on her belly, again at mile sixteen, and at the finish line
- Runners in wheelchairs, on crutches, pushing through because they committed to something bigger than themselves
- Zero politics. Zero arguments. Pure human community doing what it does best when nobody is trying to manipulate it
That is the America the outrage machine does not profit from. So they do not show it to you.
The Connection to Your Financial Life Is Not Subtle
If you think this is just a feel-good story, you are missing the point. The mental environment you operate in every day directly shapes every financial decision you make. Fear sells gold scams. Paralysis keeps you in bad annuities. Despair makes you stop contributing to your retirement account.
The people who benefit from keeping you terrified and angry are not your friends. They are not on your side. Some of them are wearing nice suits and calling themselves financial advisors.
I went to Mass that Sunday at St. Anthony’s on Houston Street in Manhattan. All Saints Day. The Gospel reading included the Beatitudes: blessed are the meek, the merciful, those who hunger for righteousness. These qualities are not naive. They are the foundation of every lasting thing ever built, including real, durable personal wealth.
What You Should Do Right Now
Start treating your information diet the same way you treat your financial portfolio. Audit it. Cut the junk. Stop feeding the machine that profits from your misery.
- Limit your daily social media exposure, set a hard stop
- Seek out stories that reflect actual human resilience, they exist everywhere
- Reconnect with your community in person, not through a screen
- Recognize that manufactured division is a tool used to sell you things you do not need and to keep you too distracted to notice when you are being ripped off
The con artists on Wall Street, the grifters in politics, and the algorithm-driven media all share one thing in common. They need you afraid and isolated. Do not give them that. What I saw in New York City this weekend is what we look like when we refuse to.
