I remember for a short period of time how unified.

I had my radio show and I bought bulk NYPD and FD New York caps and I was mailing them all over to the country, listeners of the program, doing giveaways on the show. Back then I also remember vividly where I lived in Whitestone, New York, which was very much so a blue collar
