Scammers Are Using AI to Sound Like Your Kids and Drain Your Bank Account
Welcome to the Zero Trust Era Nobody Warned You About
I have been sounding the alarm on AI for weeks now. Not because I am anti-technology. Because I believe technology should serve people, not be weaponized against them. And right now, it is being weaponized. Hard.
We are living in a world where you cannot trust what you see, what you read, or now, what you hear. Fake images, fabricated news, AI-generated content designed to look and sound real. Even I spend a significant portion of my week running stories and pictures through verification tools just to do my job. That is the baseline now.
But what I am about to tell you is worse than fake headlines.
They Can Now Fake Your Child’s Voice on a Phone Call
AI voice cloning is real, it is accessible, and criminals are using it. Here is the play. A scammer pulls audio of your kid from a social media video or a voicemail. They feed it into an AI system. That system generates a phone call that sounds exactly, not approximately, exactly like your child.
Your spouse picks up the phone. It sounds like your son. He says he is in serious trouble. He needs money sent right now. He is scared. Do not tell anyone.
I guarantee most parents send the money before they even hang up. Because they know that voice. The problem is, the voice is a machine.
This is not coming. It is already happening.
The Establishment Will Not Save You Here
Do not wait for the government to regulate this into nonexistence. Do not expect your bank to catch it before the money is gone. Wire transfers and gift cards do not come back. Cryptocurrency does not come back. By the time anyone figures out what happened, the damage is done.
You have to protect yourself. Right now. Today.
One Low-Tech Solution That Actually Works
Set up a family safe word. This is my strong recommendation for every household.
- Gather your immediate family and any elderly relatives you help care for
- Pick a word or phrase that only your family knows, something not obvious
- Establish the rule that any emergency call involving a request for money must include the safe word before anyone acts
- No safe word, no money, full stop, hang up and call back directly
Additional red flags to never ignore:
- Extreme urgency with no time to think
- Requests for gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto
- Being told to keep the situation secret from others
- Story details that shift when you ask follow-up questions
- Caller gets angry or panicked when you hesitate
The Con Is Emotional and That Is the Point
Scammers using AI-generated voice calls are not targeting your logic. They are targeting your love for your family. They know that fear for your child shuts down critical thinking faster than almost anything else. The safe word system is specifically designed to interrupt that emotional hijacking and force a moment of verification before money moves.
I do not like living in a world where this is necessary. But the train is coming whether I like it or not. The question is whether your family is on the tracks or out of the way.
