America’s Healthcare System Is a Racket and Private Equity Is Running the Scam
Nobody Is Coming to Save You
Let me tell you what is actually happening to healthcare in the United States, not the sanitized version you hear from politicians, and not the defensive version you get from people who want to tell you it is worse somewhere else. I have been living this. My family has been living this. And it is a disaster.
My mother-in-law is 86. She got sick. My wife called the doctor. No answer. Called again. No answer. No answering machine. Nothing. When she finally got an appointment and a prescription, the prescription was never called in. More calls. No answer. My wife had to drive back to the office to fix it manually. This is not an edge case. This is Tuesday in American healthcare.
The European House Call That Exposed Everything
Last Christmas in Europe, same situation, bronchitis, and I had a doctor on the phone fast. That doctor made a house call. Came to where we were staying. 75 euros. Not on the local healthcare plan. A house call for 75 euros from a country the American establishment loves to mock as socialist.
Anybody want to defend the American system now? I did not think so.
They Almost Killed Me and Did Not Care
I avoid doctors for a reason. When I finally went in because I was genuinely, seriously ill, I was dismissed and mocked. A physician’s assistant treated me like I was drug seeking rather than actually sick. I had to fight to get a scan. That scan revealed massive blood clots in my lungs. I was close to dead.
My daughter, a high school student working part time at a hospital, was the one who suggested blood clots before any credentialed professional got there. Let that sink in. A teenager beat the system because the system was not paying attention.
Here Is Who Did This to You
This did not happen randomly. There is a clear chain of custody on this catastrophe:
- Private equity firms swept in and bought hospitals, physician groups, and specialty practices, and turned them into financial engineering projects where patient volume and billing codes matter more than outcomes
- Consolidation destroyed the independent physician and the accountability that came with it
- Obamacare restructured the market in ways that promised more coverage and delivered more chaos, higher costs, and worse access for the middle class
- Administrative overhead now consumes a grotesque share of every healthcare dollar while actual care gets rationed
- The physician assistant and corporate staffing model replaced qualified doctors with lower-cost alternatives and called it progress
The Wall Street Angle Nobody Is Talking About
When private equity buys your doctor’s office, your care is no longer the product. Billing efficiency is the product. Your physician’s schedule is no longer designed around your health needs. It is designed around throughput and return on investment. This is not speculation. This is the documented business model.
And the same financial press that cheers private equity buyouts in every other sector wants you to believe healthcare is different. It is not different. It is the same extraction playbook, applied to an industry where the consequences of getting it wrong are measured in human lives.
What You Need to Do Right Now
- Stop assuming the system will catch your health problems. It very nearly did not catch mine.
- Look into direct primary care or concierge medicine if you can access it. Doctors with fewer patients actually answer the phone.
- Keep your own medical records. The system is fragmented and will not have what you need in an emergency.
- For elderly parents or family members, designate a medical advocate who can physically show up when phone calls fail.
- Build a dedicated healthcare reserve in your financial plan because costs are rising and quality is falling simultaneously.
The death spiral is real. Private equity made it worse. Bad policy accelerated it. And the people running the system have very little financial incentive to fix it. That is not cynicism. That is the structure of the deal.
