40 Trillion in Debt and the Clowns on TV Are Still Lying to Your Face
They Think You Are Stupid. Let’s Prove Them Wrong.
Every single week I watch the same circus. Politicians in expensive suits making promises about fiscal responsibility while presiding over the most reckless government spending in American history. Financial media anchors nodding along like bobbleheads. And the American public, the people whose retirements and savings are on the line, getting absolutely none of the truth.
This week was a perfect example. Let me walk you through it.
The Fiscal Hawk Fraud
Sunday morning television gave us a parade of Republican deficit hawks pounding the table about wasteful spending and budget deficits. Vote for us, they said. We will fix this.
I have one question. You controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House. You had the keys to the entire operation. What was the budget deficit on your watch?
Two trillion dollars in a single year.
And now you want a come-to-Jesus moment? Now you found fiscal religion? This is exactly why I walked away from the Republican Party over two decades ago. The Democrats are not better. They are different flavors of the same broken machine. Neither party has any intention of addressing $40 trillion in national debt because doing so would require telling voters things they do not want to hear. So they lie. They have always lied. And they will keep lying until the bond market forces their hand.
What the Bond Market Is Actually Telling You
Here is something the Sunday morning shows will never explain properly. The bond market is one of the most honest financial instruments on the planet. It does not care about talking points. It reflects what large, sophisticated investors actually believe about a country’s ability to pay its debts.
Right now, global sovereign debt yields are rising. That is the market’s way of demanding higher compensation for increasing risk. And the forces driving that are serious:
- Debt sustainability concerns: At some level, lenders start wondering if they are ever getting paid back. We are approaching that conversation.
- Inflation expectations: Print money, devalue currency, lenders demand more yield to compensate.
- Global supply of debt: Every government on earth is borrowing. There is only so much capital to go around. More supply, less demand, higher yields.
- Geopolitical tension: Foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries are not feeling warm and fuzzy right now. Tariff fights and elementary school name-calling between allied nations does not inspire confidence in creditors.
The G20 and the Theater of Incompetence
Scott Bessent was at the G20 meeting representing American interests. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada were trading playground insults publicly. These are two of the largest trading partners and debt-linked economies in the world, behaving like they belong on a middle school playground.
This is the best we can do. This is the leadership managing a $40 trillion debt load and a rising yield environment. If that does not concern you, you are not paying attention.
What This Means for Your Money
I do not just point out the problems. I want you to actually do something with this information.
- If you own long-duration bond funds, understand that rising yields mean falling prices. You are not in a safe harbor just because someone labeled it “fixed income.”
- The debt-to-GDP ratio is a number worth watching. When it climbs past the point of sustainability, markets react before any politician admits there is a problem.
- Do not trust any financial advisor or media personality who is not talking about the bond market right now. It is the most important financial story of this decade.
- Both parties will claim they have the solution. Neither does. Your financial plan cannot depend on Washington doing the right thing.
The Honest Bottom Line
I stopped getting angry about this years ago. Now it just makes me sad. People in positions of power who are supposed to protect the American public are making things up, lying on television, and nobody in the mainstream press is calling them on it.
That is exactly why this show exists. The bond market does not lie. Politicians do. Know the difference, and protect yourself accordingly.
