Lake America and a $40 Trillion Debt: Washington Is Playing You and Counting On You Not to Notice
Welcome to the Greatest Distraction Operation in American History
Lake Ontario is now Lake America. Canadian geese have Trump hair in official White House social media posts. And while half the country is losing their minds arguing about it on Facebook, Congress just quietly passed on yet another opportunity to do something, anything, about a $40 trillion national debt.
This is not accidental. This is the plan. You manufacture outrage, you feed the algorithm, you keep people emotionally activated over something completely meaningless, and while the show is running, the actual business of Washington continues exactly as the donors intended.
I have been saying this for years. I am going to keep saying it until people actually hear it.
They Had the Power and They Chose Their Donors
Let me lay out exactly what happened in plain language, because the Sunday morning shows certainly were not going to do it:
- Republicans controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House
- Spending cuts were literally sitting on the table last August
- Leadership walked away from them
- DOGE started making real cuts and Congress panicked
- Elon Musk got pushed out because the cuts were hitting donor-connected programs
- The same politicians are now back on television promising fiscal responsibility
This is the cycle. Promise, perform, protect donors, repeat. And the Bermuda Triangle joke actually tracks here because that is exactly where campaign promises go to disappear.
Citizens United Sold Your Government to the Highest Bidder
I got into a heated argument about this on Fox News with a lobbyist who tried to tell me that unlimited corporate money in politics is just the founders’ vision of petitioning the government. I told him then what I am telling you now. That is a lie wrapped in constitutional language.
Citizens United did not protect free speech. It auctioned off the legislative process. It turned Congress into a subscription service for special interests. The result is exactly what you would expect when the people writing the checks are not the people casting the votes:
- Spending never actually gets cut
- Tax code complexity protects the people who can afford to game it
- Regulatory capture keeps smaller competitors out and insiders comfortable
- Voters get distractions while the real decisions get made in rooms they never see
Stop Waiting for Washington. Start Protecting Yourself.
I have spent my career fighting for the people who get left out of those rooms. Regular investors. Retirees. Working families who are not represented by a lobbying firm.
Here is what I know after all of it. The debt is going to get worse. The distractions are going to get louder. And no one in Washington has a financial incentive to fix the problem that is quietly eroding the value of your savings, your pension, and your future purchasing power.
What you need to do right now:
- Build a financial plan that assumes continued fiscal irresponsibility in Washington
- Stop making investment decisions based on political promises from either party
- Understand that inflation is the most likely long-term consequence of unchecked debt
- Work with advisors who tell you the truth rather than the story you want to hear
The laser pointer is moving. The question is whether you are still chasing it.
